Agriculture is the Mainstay of Pakistan’s Economy

One-fourth of total output (Gross Domestic Product-GDP) and 45% total employment is generated by agriculture 62% of the country population living in rural areas is directly or indirectly linked with agriculture for their livelihood.

Land Utilization:
It is estimated that 62% of geographical area of Sindh is Arid, comprising Thar, Nara and Kohistan, beside a large area under coastal belt (350 Km) and Katcha area.

The Economic development of Sindh largely depends on the progress and growth of Agriculture Sector. The province contributes significantly towards overall national agriculture production in major crops:

36% in National Rice Production
29% in National Sugarcane Production
34% in National Cotton Production
15% in National Wheat Production

Major thrust of the Agriculture Department will be:
Modernization of agriculture research.
Advancement of mechanized agriculture.
Strong market information system.
Improved agriculture extension service.
Water Management

Despite resource constraints, insufficient technical manpower, and inadequate inputs, including irrigation water, Sindh province has not legged behind the other provinces in yields per hectare. In almost all major crops yield is either higher or very near to more developed province Punjab, which has proportionately more resources.
