On Farm Water Management

Functions:

This Directorate has taken various steps to provide facilities to the Agriculturists in order to increase productivity and for optimum use of irrigation water through lining of watercourses, construction of water storage tanks, and adaption of latest technologies such as High Efficiency Irrigation System (Drip Irrigation System).These interventions will not only enhance the agriculture production of the province but also a significant development will be made in the conservation of scare water resource of Sindh. The saved water will be used in bringing more area under cultivation to get more production and quality agriculture outputs.

Improvement/Lining of watercourses (Fresh/New) up to 30% of its length & Additional Lining of already improved watercourses

• Improvement of Watercourses saves water, fuel and electric charges.
• More area brought under cultivation, crop productivity/ quality enhancement, reduction in water logging and salinity
• Due to lining, the water is reaching at the tail of watercourses resulting in increased intensity of crops.
• Provision of employment opportunities particularly in Project area

 Construction of Water Storage Tanks/Reservoirs

• Under this intervention water storage Tanks/Reservoirs are constructed to store irrigation water and use it as per requirement of crop or during warabundi (rotation period)

Installation of High Efficiency Irrigation Systems (HEIS)

• Under this intervention HEIS units are installed for saving of water, as the irrigation water drop by drop is provided to crop as per requirement. It saves water, fertilizer, pesticide, labor, time, bringing more area under cultivation.

Provision of Laser Land Leveler Equipment on Subsidized rates

• Laser Land Leveler are provided to farmers to level the field which saves water, provides efficient drainage, reduce water logging, saves time and brings more area under cultivation.

Provision of Deep Rippers on Subsidized rates

This equipment deep ripper goes deep in the agriculture land, which results in improving the fertility and yield potential of the soil. Its provision on cheaper rates has made its availability easier for the farmers, which has resulted in enhancing the productivity of the land.

Mission & Objectives

• Watercourses improvement so as to minimize conveyance losses and improving the efficiency, reliability and equity of irrigation water.
• Management of water resources in Barani areas through micro-irrigation and other improved water management practices.
• Strengthening farmer’s participation to improve their capabilities for better management at farm level.
• Supporting Agricultural Productivity enhancement measures to complement and enhance the benefits of improved water management
• Precision Land Leveling for better water application and increased crop yields.
• Demonstration of improved farm, crop and water management techniques.
• Capacity Building Training of personnel in methods of On Farm Water Management and developing an institutional base for large scale programmes.
• Capacity Building Training of farmers and organizing them into water users groups to take the leadership for bringing about the required improvements.
• Social Mobilization of farming community for better water management and to prevent conflicts among community on equal basis.
• Farmer’s awareness through information dissemination of latest knowledge through media campaign and printed material.
